Interior Sunset
Project Concept
This project's main goal was to light a pre-modeled interior scene based on real-life lighting references. For this project, I chose to light this scene based on the warm lighting of the sunset. Therefore this scene was made to be very warm and feel cozy as if you were actually going to watch a film.
Techniques
I started this project by selecting lighting reference imagery to understand the warmth of the sunset and how the light affects the surrounding objects. I also chose a backplate image for the sunset. Starting in Autodesk Maya, I used an image plane to set the background up for initial lighting. Using a skydome light first, I created the fill light for the scene. I altered the color temperature to create warmth and I adjusted the intensity to get the ideal amount of light. To create the projector light, I used a spotlight aiming from the lens of the projector to the wall with the draped fabric. I also made the computer screen emit light to provide extra ambient lighting. I rendered passes using render layers and I also added a volume to get light casting into the interior scene. After rendering each pass, I composited the EXR files in Nuke and added the sunset backplate into the scene to make it look realistic.
Conclusion
This project was fun to create since I was able to turn a dark interior scene into a sunset interior. The lighting was fairly simple but I think it turned out really well for one of my first times lighting a scene. I'm glad I was able to create warmth in the interior and make the projector look like it was casting light. If I were to revisit this project, I would add more rim lighting to the projector and other props to make them stand out more.
